시진핑 중국 국가주석이 6·25참전 70주년 기념연설
(speech commemorating China’s entry into the Korean War 70 years ago)에서
노골적으로 대미항쟁 의지를 밝혔다(bluntly disclose his willingness to resist against the U.S.).
“미 제국주의자들의 침략(invasion of the American imperialists)에 맞서
항미원조 정신을 계승해나갈 것”이라고 분명한 경고를 보냈다(send a clear warning).
중국이 미국에 대들기 시작한(start to put itself against the U.S.) 계기는 6·25전쟁이라고 한다.
실제로 중국 내에선
6·25가 외세침략 피해를 당한 굴욕의 세기에 종지부를 찍은
(put an end to the century of humiliation of being victimized by foreign invasions)
분수령이자 전환점으로 여겨지고 있다(be perceived as a watershed or turning point).
그런 점에서
시 주석의 발언은 점증하는 미국의 압력에 직면해(in the face of its mounting pressure)
힘에서의 큰 차이를 무릅쓰더라도(despite great disparity in strength)
무력분쟁을 두려워하지(be afraid of armed conflicts) 않을 것이라는 엄포를 놓은 것으로 해석된다.
중국은 6·25를
미국에 맞서 북한을 도왔다는 ‘항미원조전쟁(War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea)’이라고 부른다.
6·25참전 기념식을 10월에 거행하는 것은
마오쩌둥 당시 주석이 중공군 300만명을 몰래(by stealth) 파병한 날짜가 10월19일,
UN연합군에 첫 공격을 가한(launch the first attack against the United Nations coalition forces) 날이
25일이었기 때문이다.
6·25 때 중공군 사망자 수(death toll)는 비밀로 돼 있다.
중국정부는 정확히 몇명이 죽었는지 명확히 밝히지 않은 채
(without providing a breakdown of how many died) 36만명이 죽거나 부상했다고만 말한다.
중국은 훨씬 큰 사상자를 냈음에도 불구하고(in spite of suffering much heavier casualties)
어쨌든 미군과 연합군을 38선으로 후퇴시켰고
협상 테이블에 앉게 했다는(force them to sit down at the negotiation table) 사실을 강조한다.
마오쩌둥이 말했듯이 “미 제국주의자들은 종이호랑이(paper tiger)”라며
심리적 승리를 거뒀다는(win a psychological victory) 자신감을 되뇌고 있다.
시 주석이 보란 듯이 6·25참전 기념식에 참석해 큰소리를 친 데는 나름의 포석이 깔려 있다.
중국을 포위하려는 미국의 시도에 맞서(stand up to Washington’s attempts to encircle China)
6·25 때처럼 큰 희생은 치를지언정 결코 물러서지 않을 뜻임을 과시한 것이다.
중국 공산당이 6·25를
정치적 목적의 국수주의와 맹목적 애국주의(nationalism and jingoism on a political purpose)를 부추기는
수단으로 되살려 악용하고 있다.
